Can I remap keys to a different letter?

Question: I spilled liquid on my Macbook keyboard and now 'j' key makes a '∆'. Is there a way to remap it so that the ∆ = j ? I can make the j with an external USB keyboard, but would like to avoid using that by doing the remapping. Any ideas? Anyone?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

You may be able to assign one of the F keys (not used by another function already) to be the J key, but am not familar with that aspect; however the Keyboard & Mouse system preference panel may offer ideas, as well as the Keyboard Viewer feature where you can see the alternative use of existing keys when you push Shift + or Opt, etc along with a character key.

There is an ifixit.com guide on how to replace a keyboard, you'd have to be sure the one you looked into was the same as your model build and used the same part, etc.

Hopefully it'll be loads of fun...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

There is this older version of KeyRemap for earlier OS X 10.4 & 10.5 versions, not sure how it works, but is supposed to be Universal, to use with intel-Mac and older ppc-Mac, too...

Their latest version said to be here, is too new:

And then, there's this other thing, 'DoubleCommand' with an older version on the page where newer one appears...

Double Command v1.6.9 for OS X 10.4.11:

(I'd consider the KeyRemap4MacBook before DoubleCommand)

Not sure this'll help...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Yes, appears to not be all that it could be. And later OS X versions are said to do more on their own, but that'd be from Snow Leopard on forward. And so many older Macs aren't going there.

Some users of Keyremap4macbook had removed it after messing around awhile, or so I read through user forums. And a few issues with the DoubleCommand, in that it can do a few things, but not what so many would've hoped. There are or were some shareware or retail applications, likely too new.

The Keyboard system preferences panel in later

OS Xsystems, has more stuff. But mine don't.

Doesn't look like a working answer, as it is.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

PS: how about this:

The tedium involved with details when or if using Ukelele, may be worth the trouble. Just so long as the process is not difficult to undo if undesired or odd results occur.

Hopefully there is an answer for older Macs with no upward mobility.

One is a repair on older Macs, such as wegenermedia & others do.

Of course, with an intel-based Mac, there is Snow Leopard. A long

way to cure a keyboard issue. Easier to pack it up for a visit to some

repair facility, after working out shipping details to their specificiation.

Except for the costs and loss of use while it's away on sick leave.

It may be OK or a reason to add wild stuff to your coffee.
