I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) when I plug it in, it usually gives me a dim green light with a brightly flashing orange on the charger indicator. Since the MBP will not start, I am unable to try resetting the SMC as many people have suggested.

It is out of warranty and I work in IT by trade so I am willing to take it apart and try different solutions.

  • I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery on the motherboard and have had a slight success. I left the battery unplugged from the motherboard for roughly 24hr, and when I plugged it back in and then plugged the charger in, I saw a bright green light and then it changed to the solid orange charging light. I was then able to start the MBP. It loaded all the way into Maverick and I used it for a couple minutes and then it just quit.
  • Since then I have not seen anything other than the blinking orange light and a black screen.

I am looking for things to try or someone with credibility to tell me to buy a new battery for it. I just don't want to spend money on a battery unless I am fairly sure it will fix it.

After unplugging and reconnecting the battery over the last week and taking out the optical drive to dislodge a piece of paper from the optical drive, the next time I plugged the macbook pro (MBP) in, it started charging. When I proceeded to try and boot the MBP I found that the hard drive was corrupt. I reformated the hard drive and reloaded the os. So far the MBP is working other than the battery suggests getting it serviced.

The only reason it is telling to to service soon it because, it is approaching 1000 battery cycles. Is there somewhere I can buy a legitamite Apple battery for it. Can I buy just a battery from Apple?

I want to install it myself, because I don't trust the Apple Store anymore. They told me the laptop had extensive corrosion damage and would cost over $400 dollars to fix. I fixed the main issue without spending a penny.

1000 cycles is a good run.

I don't think Apple will sell the battery without installing in it. There are many battery models out there now, you may be able to find one on Amazon, but make sure it is a authenic Apple battery, make sure that the model is exact, as well as all other tech specs. Make sure all the specs are correct.

Avoid 3rd party batteries all together.

Having Apple it do it you get a warranty, in case the battery is defective, the part and labor is covered.

I have read about issues about self installing, as well as batteries that had to be replaced. Think about it, these guys do this all day long.

Get a price from Apple.

All the best
