Workgroup Manager printer problem 10.8

I've added an HP P2035n printer to my ML server and added it to a managed computer group using WGM. When I print from one of the managed MBAirs, also running 10.8.5, the printer spits out sheets garbage. On the MBA, the printer is not showing the 1.4 driver but is using "MCX...".I've seen this before and corrected it in a 10.6 system, but can't remember how.

Mac mini, OS X Server, OS X 10.8.5, 2GHz i7, 4 GB RAM

This issue can be the result of selecting the wrong driver; e.g., generic PCL instead of Postscript. Or the printer may be configured internally to use the wrong kind of driver. An older, unsupported laser printer will sometimes work with the generic Postscript driver.
