Q: Can I create a canvas in Aperture?

Hi,

I need to order 5x7 images on 8x10 sheets on line.

Apparently, in Photoshop, one creates a canvas to one's specifications and then send the new file to be printed accordingly.

How do we achieve that in Aperture? Can we?

 

I  know it can be done when ordering books via Aperture.

If you want  5x7 images on 8x10 sheets, I'd use the BorderFX plug-in to (BorderFX - BorderFX) add a custom border and buy 8x10 prints.

    I wonder why Aperture does not include such a feature.

     

    I also wish there was a Help folder, the two You Tube videos being so useless. But...it works.

    Have you tried the search field on the BorderFX support page?  http://www.iborderfx.com/support/

     

    There is really not much documentation. I used the trial-and-error method.

    This plug-in looks so promising - still not intuitive enough for me to use it fully.

    And yet, there are so many useful features to it!

    Too many questions to ask one-by-one - shame they don't offer some kind of systematic user guide.

     

    Still, I am grateful to have downloaded it. I sent them a comment about the above.

    But now, as I try Exporting the new BorderFX file - or any other file for that matter, the Export button flickers as usual when clicked but no exporting take place!

     

    I've rebooted Aperture, etc, but nothing will retore the Export mechanism.

    Any ideas?

    Raphael, I have no idea, what could be different in your case.

    I just select the image and export it using BorderFX:

    In BorderFX:

    And the exported image on my Desktop:

    And exporting the image again, after adding a retouche and exporting regularly:

    So, exporting is still working for me. Did you use BorderFX as "Edit" plug-in or "Export" plug-in?

    Try to  use the "Export" version of the plug-in.

     

     

    So, how to fix your broken "Export"?

    Have you tried to change the "Export" preset in your "Export" panel?

     

    If that does not help, I'd Quit Aperture. and remove the file

    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Export Presets.plist

    from your user library.

     

    Also the sandbox: 

    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Aperture/Data/Library/

     

    Then reboot.

    Thank you Léonie. Everything works now, I think.

     

    When you said BorderFX "Edit" plug-in or "Export" plug-in, I didn't know I had to go to 2 different drop downs on the Aperture Menu Bar. But now...ahem..I do.

     

    So the Edit one is to create presets, and the Export one is to...export them. I was able to batch preset images.

    Two hiccups: a) BFX refuses to export to the destination folder on the Desktop - and I have to drag files to that particular folder (go figure) and, b) one image I was experimenting with, using the Edit module, produced a Thumbnail with white margins around it alright, but it seems to have also cannibalized all preceding thumnails, and...furthermore I can't undo it.

     

    What do you think? I don't want to impose.

    The Edit plug-in writes the edited image back as a new image to the Aperture library, and the Export plug-in will edit, but export directly and not store the image in Aperture.

    I don't understand - has the new image replaced all previous versions? BorderFX should create a new original master image file, independent of the previous image.

    a) It does export it all. They line up on the desktop and then I drag them to a folder to keep them together and upload them to the printer's.

     

    b) It has absorbed all versions (I bracket), and versions of other images that came before it. It's very strange. Anything that predated this image has gone (where?) But images shot after that are there.

    Léonie, It's all back to normal.

     

    And ...

     

    ...when exporting a 13.4 MB file via BFX,

    a) after it is formatted by the software it winds up as half its original size - 7.91MB (as an 8-bit Tiff  with no compression - but....19.39MB  with 1.5" white border all-around), and

     

    b) when it lands on the Desktop - for uploading to my online photo lab who will print them for me, it is a 9.2MB file (20.3MB with 1.5" white border all-around). Why is that?

     

    In fact, iwhen this same 13.4MB file is exported as a jpeg with 1.5" borders, it drops to 870KB or so once  on the desktop!

     

    Meanwhile, it's a very useful piece of software , once you figure it out - like everything else  in life.
