Q: Where is the trash can so I can delete photos?

I have 600 unwanted photos in my Photostream and very little free space on my iPad 4. When I select photos in the "My Photostream" album there is no option to delete them, as shown in other posts in this forum. Icloud ignores them, because they are over 30 days old (why this crazy limitation?)

How the ..... Can I remove these photos? The only option I know is to delete everything by returning the iPad to its factory state, which is not attractive.

Apple seem to have forgotten that people need to be able to manage their data, iTunes is the worst piece of software I've ever experienced and icloud is little better.

Please does Anyone know a solution, which will overcome Apple's omission and allow me to manage my photos myself?

P.S. Sorry about the random capital letters, but this iPad won't let me place the cursor with any precision. That's a question for another day, together with "why does this forum say that I have IOS 6.0.1 on my IOS 7.0.4 iPad?

iPad, iOS 6.0.1

Are these photos in shared Photo Streams?
Unless you are the owner of the shared Photo Stream, you can not delete.

To remove shared Photo Streams, you have to unsubscribe from them.

Select the shared Photo Stream > People (bottom right) > Scroll to the bottom and tap Unsubscribe

In My Photo Stream, tap select  (top right) > tap the photos you want to delete then the trash can( bottom right).

Are you saying there is no trash can icon?

Do you have one on the bottom right when you tap a photo in My Photo Stream

Are you sure it is Photo Stream and not photos synced to the device from iTunes?

These can only be deleted by removing them from iTunes and resyncing.

    iTunes: Syncing photos

Open the Photos app and select Albums (bottom right). What is the name of the album that these photos are in?

Yes it is definitely the icloud Photostream, the same photos were in the appropriate folder on my laptop. It was only when I deleted some that I discovered that icloud wasn't working as I expected. It ignores them, because they were transferred to the iPad more than 30 days ago.

I was hoping to post a screenshot, but this forum doesn't seem to provide that facility. The advanced editor appeared briefly, then disappeared.

There is no trash icon anywhere, I even scrolled down the 600 images to see whether it was secreted at the bottom.

The album is actually called My Photo Stream

All Photo Streams are iCloud Photo Streams. Are the photos in My Photo Stream in tthe Albums section of the Photos app?

Deleted them from where? iPad? Computer?

What happened and what were you expecting?

What do you mean it ignores them?

It ignores them, because they were transferred to the iPad

Transfered to the iPad from where?

they were transferred to the iPad more than 30 days ago.

This is irrelevant. Photo Stream photos are stored on the server for 30 days but your iOS device will hold 1000 Photo Stream photos.

With that being said, if they are older than 30 days, turn off Photo Stream in the iCloud settings then back on and it will clear all but the last 30 days of photos in your Photo Stream.

Yes My Photo Streams is an album.

Deleted on laptop, they are no longer in the folder icloud uses. I expected icloud to then delete them from iPad. It didn't, they are still there.

I turned icloud photo stream off and then on before asking this question, still have 600 photos on my iPad more than 30 days old.

Did you log into iCloud on your computer and try deleting them from there.

That is correct. They are no longer on the server and changes won't get pushed to the iPad. They are archived on your computer.

This does not explain why they can not be deleted from the iPad.

Turning off Photo Stream in Settings > iCloud > Photo Stream should have cleared the Photostream.

Try turning off Photo Stream again and then Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and don’t let go until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears (no data will be lost)

    Then check again.

Tap the word "Select" in the top right corner. Select the photos you wish to delete. This will indicate these photos with a check mark. When you have selected all photos for deletion, tap the "Trash Can" icon in the top left corner.
