Why can't I airdrop from ipad air or iphone 5 to my MacBook Pro? I must be doing something wrong

Airdrop between iOS and OS X might not work but create a shared photo stream on iCloud and both devices will see the content.

Not true. I just sent a picture from my MacBook Pro to my iPhone 5s via AirDrop.

That was months ago.

What OS version are you running?

Im having the same issue. MacBookPro Mid 2010 model will not see my iPhone 5 in airdrop. Phone is running 8.2 and mac is 10.10.

Phone is not running 8.2 as it doesn't exist yet.

Judy was right at the time of her original post, but it is a new feature in yosemite.

Although many people with the latest software on both iOS and mac are not being able to do this yet.

8.1 was launched Monday, October 20th, I'm sure that's what NavyJay007 meant

I can airdrop from my Mac Air to my iPad (Yosemite to iOS 8.1) but not from the iPad to Mac Air. I can hear it clicking on my Mac Air, but if it's showing up, I can't find it. There's no notice to accept, nothing like that. Help!

I'm having the same problem: the iPad Mini shows up in my Mac Air but the Mac doesn't show up on the iPad. The Mac is running Yosemite (10.10) and I just installed iOS 8.1 on the iPad. Upgrading the iPad didn't help.

Try signing out of iCloud and Keychain on all devices, turn off bluetooth and handoff. Then sign back in and tun it all back on.

This did the trick!

It was enough to simply sign out of iCloud and turn off Bluetooth on both devices. I saw no way to sign out of Keychain Access on the Mac and couldn't find any mention of Handoff on either device. When I signed back in to iCloud on the Mac, it prompted me to upgrade iCloud Drive. I accepted the upgrade.
