Q: Apple Color - Correcting two clips with a cross dissolve in between

So I've run into this problem where I'm trying to color correct a shot but can't see the end of it because it is part of a cross dissolve...but the next clip starts at the beginning of the dissolve so I CAN correct it. Is there a way to view the first clip all the way to it's end..which is right in the middle of the dissolve? The reason I want to see the absolute end of the first clip is because I have a keyframed vignette on a portion of the shot and want it to be keyframed all the way to the end of the shot even though it will be crossfading at that point with the second shot.

Thanks!

Did you bring in a QT file that was chopped up?  Because if you exported straight from FCP, the dissolves aren't there...just the clips.  You only see dissolves if you are bringing in a single QT file that was chopped with an EDL, or manually in FCP.

Well, all I did to send my FCP timeline to color I believe was "send to color"...to be honest though I don't remember if I just highlighted my sequence in the browser  then control clicked and sent to color...or If I had my sequence opened in my timeline and just went File>Send To>Color...but I'm pretty sure it was the latter that I did...oh boy, did I mess this up or what? JUST actually finishing grade on entire first 20 minutes of film!

No...that sounds right. But you shouldn't see any dissolves. Just straight cuts.  Of course you'll see the clips cut off at the mid-point of the dissolve, so if the shot continues...say it's a long dissolve, you'll only see the clip up to the halfway point.  So no, you can't see the end of the clip.

Ok, so what is there is just a place holder for the cross dissolves...which is the rectangular box which says "cross dissolve", even though you can't actually see the dissolve taking place between the two clips..it just goes straight to the next clip. This was the same case with a tutorial I just checked out on youtube. But still, my problem is the same...you can only view the first clip up to where the dissolve STARTS...at which point it switches over to the second clip..and so I therefore can't finish my keyframing of the end of the first clip, which would be the first half of the dissolve...The best I've been able to do is double click the first clip, which actually makes the first clip viewable on whatever frame you're on in the actual dissolve area..but I have to double click that first clip for EVERY FRAME while in the dissolve placeholder...you can't scrub or playback over this area (the first half of the dissolve) because it just jumps to the next clip at the BEGINNING of the dissolve...would think there is something rediculously simple that I'm missing here...like where I can temporarily view the last bit of my clip in the dissolve placeholder area...besides having to double click my clip for every frame that I want to see...

If you need to do that, then you should layer your footage...put the clip on V2 and extend it to the point you need to finish the keyframe.

If you do that in FCP, export an XML, and then import that into the Color Project as a RECONFORM, it should keep all of your corrections, and only change what you changed.

Duplicate the Color project...just to be sure.

Great, thanks Shane. I may just try to get through these few shots by going frame by the frame during that first part of the fade (although I don't know if this will render correctly in Color..but I will see if it does)...and then send back to FCP see how it looks. I'm wondering though if your suggestion should be the way I do it for the other reels since I do have some other fades and may have to keyframe some stuff...I'm just kind of surprised this was not brought up in any tutorials for sending sequences from FCP to Color...surely other people have had to keyframe or do other work to clips which are in the cross dissolve placeholder area???

I have...thus why I knew to layer the clip on the upper layer.  Didn't learn this in a tutorial...from experience.
