Don't EVER dispose of Pages-09

Pages-09 was a "bridge" version in that it would open up an older Pages document and allow a save in the newer format. The current version of Pages will NOT open up files saved in the older format. The following message appears:

Fortunately, you can have both '09 and the current version loaded concurrently and choose which one you wish to use. After using '09 to resave, you can then open the document in the current version.

I have both versions and I definitely prefer the 09.

What frequently happens, though, is that I will create a new document in 09 and save it as such. But when I go back a day or so later and click to open the document, I get a window that says "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Even though I created it in 09 to begin with!

So then I have to drag it to the newer icon to open, then Export it back to 09.

Is there any way to keep this from happening?

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

You are alternately opening the wrong versions.

Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5.1 files can not be opened in Pages 5.

Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.

All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.

Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.

Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

Peter: Thank you for your reply/explanation. I do have the Pages 5.1 and that's the one I dislike.

But I'm not sure if I should trash it altogether; I do free-lance editing and I suppose someone might send me something that the iWork 09 version couldn't open?

Also because I can't tell until I open a document which version it will be in. I NEVER create documents in Pages 5.1 but sometimes they want to re-open in that version. So I'm sure that as I go through and export them back to 09, I will likely miss one in some obscure file and if I don't have access to the 5.1, I won't ever be able to get at it.

As you've probably figured out, I'm sort of a tech dummy, so could you explain how I would archive the Pages 5.1, and if that would mean it is still somewhere that I can get it back if I need it. (Like, could I put it on an external portable drive?)

One of my big reasons for selecting Apple many years ago was I found their products and programs to be very intuitive, easy for me to learn, and that's saying something! Either I'm getting dumber or this is an exception!
