DaveC,

as to the "why", no idea. It applies to many kinds of past purchases. You can only download again items, that are currently sold at the stores.

Have you checked, if you still have a copy of your artist lesson on your backup? Does your Time Machine backup go back in time far enough? You need to check for this folder in the system Library and restore it.

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Learn to Play/Artist Lessons/

One more thought - are you asking this, because you just upgraded to GarageBand 10.0 and found the Lesson Store gone? To enable the Lesson store again and download at lest the basic lessons, see this link:

Expanding GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) content with an in-app purchase

If you already own a copy of GarageBand '11, the in-app purchase is free: Simply use "restore Purchase" from the GarageBand menu.

Thanks for your reply.

I already have GB11 and recently had a crash which left me unable to restore from backup the Artist lessons I purchased over 18mths ago. These Artist lessons are still available but why should I have to pay again just because Apple puts an 18mth deadline. I have searched the net for an answer and there seems to be loads of other people in the same positon as me. Apple do not reply and seem to think that silence is the best way to deal with customers complaints. I moved from windows to mac thinking (wrongly as it happens) that they were better at customer support!!

Well thanks again for your reply, I guess I will just have to learn from my mistake.

If you still have the email receipt of your purchase, contact the store by using the "Report a problem" link, and ask for a redeem code:

Report the problem with your purchase: See this document:

How to report an issue with your iTunes Store, App Store, Mac App Store, or iBookstore purchase

If also your emails have been lost, when your drive crashed, try to contact Apple Support:

I've encountered the same issue: moved to a new laptop and my GarageBand artist lessons I purchased back in 2009 & 2010 are not available, with no obvious way to get them back.

After trying many of the suggestions from around the web to no avail, I decided to call Apple support for help. These folks are always very earnest and they went out of their way to help me. Here are some of the things they had me try:

- Go to store.apple.com and search order history. As others have reported, that only goes back 18 months.

- Asked me to search ~/Library/Application Support/Garageband/ (that folder didn't exist on my new laptop).

- Asked if I still had access to the data from the old laptop (I did not)

- Had me go through my order history in the iTunes Mac App. Although that goes back way further than 18 months, for some reason my artist lessons weren't listed there

- Asked me to find the original email receipts. I did find them, but they still couldn't access my original order from those order numbers.

In this process I got passed from the original advisor to a senior advisor then to an "itunes specialist". They said that since my purchases predated the App store, that they should be in my iTunes order history, but obviously they were not. Finally they told me they needed engineering to research this further. The advisor gave me a case number and a phone number to get direct access back to him, and told me they'd have an answer in 2 business days.

An hour later he called me back and said they'd credit my iTunes account for the cost of the missing lessons and to just go ahead and re-purchase them.

Bottom line, I'm a satisfied customer. If you haven't tried calling Apple Support, I'd say give it a try. It's a breath of fresh air as opposed to most large company's support call centers!
