Where did you get that impression? As the Wikipedia article you linked states,

The iPhone 4 supports the most recent release of iOS, iOS 7, as released in September 2013. However, certain visual effects (such as the use of blurred translucency, and the parallax effect on the home screen), live camera filters, and AirDrop are disabled on the iPhone 4 due to performance concerns.[62]

Wikipedia is not a reliable source for information. It can be a great starting point when attempting to learn more about a product, person or event, but it is not a place that is guaranteed to have correct information.

The date when an iPhone is discontinued from sale has absolutely nothing to do with what versions of iOS are supported on it. The internal components of different versions of the same model (8GB vs 16GB vs 32GB) also have no affect on which version of iOS is supported on the phone either.

I highly recommend you check your information with at least one other source before you post it here as posting inaccurate information is not at all helpful to those who are here asking for help.

Yes Damien, my iPhone 4 (16 GB - White) is now compatible with iOS 4.2.1.. IT'S TOO LATE TO UPDATE MY IOS SOFTWARE!! 😝

No, AshleyMcCraw, IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO UPDATE YOUR IPHONE TO iOS 7.1.1 (the most current version).

iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5C and 5S will all run iOS 7.1.1, the most current version.

You and DamienLu (same person?) are posting incorrect info!

Your whole post is wrong. iPhone 4S is running 7.1.2 and the iPhone 4 runs 7.1.2. My iPhone 4S runs ios 7 just fine. No app crashes. No random rebooting. And it is not obsolete. Apple is still selling the iPhone 4S. The only problem I have had with the phone is the mic falling. I could make calls but know one would here me. but I could still record video with sound ( I think there is 2 mic).

"I got some information from Wikipedia about Oldest Version iOS 4.2.1 is now compatible with iPhone 3G.."

iOS 4.2.1 was release in November 2010 and was compatible with the iPhone 3G immediately when iOS 4.2.1 was released.

"Humm.. I'm sure that the Oldest Version iOS 4.2.1 is now compatible with both iPhone 3G (8 GB) and iPhone 4 (16-32 GB)..."

iOS 4.2.1 is no longer available for the the iPhone 4. You can only install iOS 7.1.1 on the iPhone 4..

Humm... The compatible are difference on iOS versions with each Apple iPhone (capacity storage) below:

1. Version iOS 4.2.1 is now compatible with iPhone 4 (16 & 32 GB)

2. Version iOS 5.0.1 is now compatible with iPhone 4S (32 & 64 GB)

3. Version iOS 6.1.3 is now compatible with iPhone 4 (8 GB) and iPhone 4S (16 GB)

4. Version iOS 7.1.1 is now compatible with iPhone 4 (8 GB) and iPhone 4S (8 GB)

5. New Version iOS 8 (Coming This Fall) will compatible with iPhone 4S (8 GB) during this Fall 2014...

My iPhone 4S (64 GB) does not compatible with iOS 7 or 8... Just kept using iOS 6.1.3 or older version as iOS 5.0.1...
