Buttons appear that it is quite hard to double click rather than the normal swipe to unlock etc. Has anyone come across this before? Have checked settings and searched through internet but unable to find anything relevant.

Maybe your screen protector is causing the problem.
Hi, there isn't any screen protector. An example is if it has been asleep you press home button and 'slide to unlock' and 'time' have highlighted outline round them and I have to press twice on the swipe rather than swipe
Try triple-click the Home button (do it quick)

My ipad air doesn't allow swipe mode on majority of apps.
