I want to "share a book", but do not want to "share highlights"... how is that done?

My wife and I share our books.

Sometimes we both may want to make a note or highlight something.

But we don't want see each others highlights.

I assume many people want to do the same...

But I have not found instructions on how that is done.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how that is done?
