How to fix/access a dead HD?!?

I was using an old Macbook for storage but it appears to be dead. At first, there were issues getting the OS to boot and eventually, it completely failed. I've run data recovery software on other drives so I popped out the 120GB SATA drive and connected it to my Macbook Pro with a USB-SATA connection. The drive seems to power up, however it does not appear in Disk Utility and I have been unable to access it or try data recovery.

I've done a little searching for videos or instructions on how to repair the issue but I haven't found anything. Does anyone have any ideas, possible fixes or links? I'd love to open up the drive and tinker with it or replace parts but I have no idea where to start. Please help. Thanks!

The details of the guts of a hard drive are not the same on all drives, but the basics are pretty much the same. These video might help you get started:

Remember to take the obvious and well known precautions when working on electronics. In particular, moisture and static discharges can be lethal to the components.
