Lacie Rugged External drive not working

I recently updated to the latest OS X Mavericks system software and impressed with it all.

However in the last day my external drive - a LACIE Rugged HDD 1TB - has stopped working. It won't mount, though it is recognised in the 'profiler' list for my MacBook Pro. I don't understand this.

Perhaps the hard drive has failed? I wonder if there is anything else to do before throwing it away? (There were no clicks heard in the weeks prior to this problem)

I have tried the Lacie Rugged HDD on other Mac machines, and swapped out connecting cables (I use USB), and even changed the format too (I used FW 800 cables) to no avail. Also tested the HDD connected to other USB ports on my MBP)

What is strange is that the Lacie Rugged HDD is now warm while connected to my MacBookPro. It won't mount still.

Does this mean the 'bridge' that connects the HDD inside to the USB connectors maybe at fault here? And the HDD is still intact?

Has anyone discovered that OS X Mavericks might corrupt these bus powered external hard drives?

Any thought much appreciated.

Hello all,

I have been worried all day why my Lacie Hard drive wasn't working. Googled a lot of different things and just wanted to share what happened for just in case it helps someone else.

My drive was running but the light was not flashing and showing up.

The answer to my problem was just another power cord to connect from my drive to my mac. It took two tries but after that I was good to go and had no problems after that. I know it sounds simple but if it helps anyone It will be worth it.

If you had tried the disk in different computers, and none of them can work with the disk, the problem must be in the disk.

There are a plenty of problems that can kill a disk, as it has mechanical components that are very sensitive.

¿Do the sounds from the disk sound normal?, when you start the disk, motor should start to spin increasing the speed, then the heads do a cric cric sound when working.

If you don't heard any sounds, may be the motor have stuck, this happens sometimes and a desperate fix can be to give a little knock or heat-cold treatment

I just placed the LACIE Hard drive inside a OWC enclosure which I knew worked for another drive. Sadly, it is still not responding which makes me believe my HDD is no longer working. Thankfully I had a clone which is only a month old, but this does underline a method of backups on a constant basis. At least I didn't lose everything.

Thanks for your inquiry.

ps: On a smaller note - I do remember a beep coming from my Lacie hdd a few weeks ago but couldn't figure this out. Now I'm thinking this is the equivalent of the click click that we hear normally before the drive finally dies.
