Windows Media Player file format invalid

I'm running Mac OS 10.3.9 and the latest Windows Media Player 9.0.0. Sometimes when I try to open Windows Media Player files (.asx) people send me I get "Cannot play back the file. The file format is invalid." How can I get these files to play?
Or is there another Mac application that will play these file (.asx) file formats?

Videolan's VLC will play almost anything.Also, it's freeware.

I downloaded VLC, installed, opened the application. However, it says "You cannot open the application "VLC" because it may be damaged or incomplete."
Please advise.

For some reason you did not get the full .dmg in your desktop.Sometimes because of a bad connection or other similar reason you get something misssing. Go to the videolan.org ( I think, you can get the destination from the previous link ) and download again.
