i bought my macbook air off a friend, i can't install iPhoto or iMovie for free :(

Hi People,

me askign for help again i am affraid, mac newbie here..

i was lucky enough to purchase a pristine macbook air mid 2011 off my friend today and have been having some teething troubles.

one being i would really like to download imovie and iphoto, and i was told they were free....however it says that they have been downloaded by another user and now are £10.49 each?

I have done a complete system reboot (i accidently deleted the partitioned drive today and had to do an internet reinstall to mountain lion, then an update to maverick...took about 8 hours). as far as i know it is now factory resett, and app store is running with my user ID...

can anyone please help me (in idiot terms until i get used to the mac world), to get these two apps for free?

Probably not... unless you can get your friend to sign in to his Mac ID and re-download them.

Deleting the entire drive was where you went astray. You really only needed to get your friend to unregister the machine, and then delete his user account after you made your own master user account.

The apps are not free, as you did not purchase a new Mac within the prescribed time period.

Contact Apple Customer relations and have that Air transferred to your Apple ID, IE Removed from your friends Apple ID.

You should then be able to download the always included, FREE, iLife Apps.

That is for the iWork Apps. Not the always included and free iLife Apps.

Surely if they were "always included and free", there would be no reason to assign a price to them in the App Store.

I agree they are often included and free with new Macs.

They are free, your friend made a mistake,

he needs to open http://supportprofile.apple.com and log in with his Apple ID. Then, choose "Edit Products" and remove the MacBook Air.

that macbook needs to be disassociated with his ID

then recover ( http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/ ) the machine as new from box state with Imovie and Iphoto installed at that point under your user name / ID

Your link is pointing to the iWorks suite of Apps that is now included with the purchase of a new Mac. The iLife apps have always come with all Mac computers sold. They include "i" Movie, Photo and Garageband and use to include "i" DVD & WEB.
