troubleshoot ipod nano

How can I sync podcasts from the mac to my nano? something has changed. I can see the subscribed unplayed podcasts but there is no checkbox - only the blue circles indicating unread. Some of my subscribed pods i.e. Splendid Table, have disappeared from the nano but still show on my podcast list as unread.
