iPad drops signal whenever streaming video...but only on home network and Anroid phone doesn't

Bear with me but this is sort of a complicated problem. I had a problem back in October where anytime I'd stream videos on my iPad after the ios upgrade it would lose an internet connection. I tried all sorts of things: resetting network connection, reseting iPad overall, resetting modem, and waiting for the ios 7 updates (currently running most recent one of 7.0.4).

After all of this I'm STILL having problems with streaming video. Basically, almost anytime I stream a video--youtube, netflix, etc--on my iPad, after maybe 2 minutes the connection will drop and the whole wifi network at home will disconnect. (Note: its not just my iPad that will lose the connection, but also my computer, which is a PC, and my phone, which runs android).

I did a few experiments to see what the problem was and found this:

  • if I watch the same streaming video on my phone (Android) or computer (PC) there's no problem at all. Even right after the WiFi connectio drops and I need to reset it. And I've tried re-watching something on my iPad after watching it on my droid and....the connectio drops
  • If i watch the same streaming video--or any streaming video for that matter--at another person's house I don't get this problem whatsoever.
  • my roommate, who also has an iPad (as well as iPhone and a Mac), gets this same problem when streaming video--but only from our home

So from that all I can tell is that there's something wrong with streaming video, but ONLY on our network, and ONLY on Apple products. I'd say it was a problem with my ISP provider, modem, or router, but then why would streaming video work on my Android phone and computer (I posted on a Comcast forumfor anyone interested, but my calls/chats with tech support have been...unhelpful to say the least).

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Would really like to be able to watch things on my iPad instead of my tiny phone

Hi Braden,

Sorry for the late reply but wanted to test this out and make sure it worked since some solutions in the past have worked for a few days and then stopped.

Anyway, I reconfigured the entire wireless router based on those instructions. There were a few parts I couldn't find options to do with my configuration that were in the guide you linked to (specifically, 2.4 GHz Radio Mode. 5 GHz Radio Mode, Channel, 2.4 GHz Channel Width, 5 GHz Channel Width, DHCP, and NAT), but so far so good.

Only minor wrinkle is that I've noticed when I get back home and hop on my iPad--which I've left on--I'll try to check email or connect to the web, and while the icon will say its connected, it just gets stuck in loading mode. But if I go into settings and turn wifi off and on again works fine. Minor problem but I'll take it to be able to stream videos again!

Hi again, Polk011!

This issue sounds like it might be an issue with your DNS settings, which are explained here:

Non-responsive DNS server or invalid DNS configuration can cause long delay before webpages load

Also, not all of the steps in the article from my previous post may be relevant, since some of those settings depend on your hardware having the ability to adjust those settings. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!
