Apple TV software update will not download in iTunes. Error 3259.

Hi All

My ATV has had a constant blinking LED for the last few days and I've been unable to view it on my TV.

I have been led to believe that I need to restore my ATV to factory settings in iTunes to solve this issue.

When I connect the ATV and select to update and restore, the new software download will only get to about 40MB of 661MB before it fails and displays the message "There was a problem downloading the software for the Apple TV. The Network connection timed out" (error 3259).

My internet connection seems fine. Not sure if it's related but I've also lost the ability to use Mac Mail - having all sorts of issues with that!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the leads Rudegar.

Unfortunately no success yet! I've tried un-checking all proxy options in network settings. I've tried selecting auto proxy discovery. I have no anti virus software running. My firewall is turned off. I have the latest version of iTunes.

I still haven't had any success - the download gets 100MB into the 650MB download and stops - error 3259

Any other advice?? Thanks!

For what it's worth, I was having the same problem on every single attempt to download iOS updates for iPhones and iPads, for months. I have no firewalls set up, either in the router or Mac, but I finally tweaked a setting on my router called "TCP Session Timeout Duration", was 1,800 seconds and changed to 180,000 seconds. My update to iOS 7.0.6 just now downloaded fine, so maybe my router was killing the long download stream.

Hi Dave

Yeah didn't look at that. But as luck would have it, the download finally worked. I have no idea what changed that may have enabled it. Frustrating that it took me so long to be able to use the ATV again, especially since I've got paid subscriptions on there! Oh well, it's all good now but lets hope the next time round is simple!!

Hi Dave,

I tried going into my router admin/settings but I did not find anything like "TCP Session Timeout Duration". Everything looked fine. In fact, I just downloaded the latest iTunes update, which came in today. The download and install went smoothly. And yet, the ATV restore won't go through.... 😢 Sometimes it gets further into the download, and sometimes it doesn't go over a quarter. I'll keep trying but I don't know if just insisting will do anything. I don't have a firewall set up either.

I managed to restore my Apple TV. But I wanted to leave a reply here because it didn't have anything to do with any of the suggestions that have been posted.

I have a macbook pro, iTunes software up to date, OS up to date. Internet works fine. I checked my router settings from the admin page and everything is fine. I don't have a firewall. But this problem wouldn't stop. So I called Apple.

The person on the phone asked if there was another computer in the home. There is another laptop, a PC. So they suggested I try it with the PC laptop. Guess what? The download went smoothly and quite fast, and my AppleTV was restored. All in less than an hour.

Why it didn't work with the macbook pro, I don't know and they didn't know either.
