Safari is now opening new tabs for each google click

I'm not sure when this started happening, but it was in the last two days. Everytime I do a google search and click on the result I want, safari is opening a new tab with the result. It always used to open in the same tab, so I could go backwards and right back to the google search. Now I have to go manually close the new tab. Its opening up way too many unnecasry tabs.

I can't find any viable options in preferences to change this back.

Any ideas what happened or how I can fix it?
