Removing phone # from child's iPad

With my kids using the same Apple ID, I'm concerned with the presence of my phone number on their iPads. I understand that I can go into settings and uncheck the number. However, on more than one occasion, after updating the operating system or using a foreign wifi, the iPads have reset and all of the sudden, my kids start getting my text messages.

Does anyone know how I can completely remove my phone number from the machine?

It is probably a bad idea for multiple people (kids or not) to use the same ID.

Having said that, go to this location to edit your Appleid:

Barry, can you say why?
Obviously, I want to make sure that I don't have to buy an app three times over or a song three times over. Am I missing something that allows them to share all those apps and songs I buy while they still have a different Apple ID?
Also, I tried your suggestion, but it doesn't allow you to set permissions for individual iPads or iPhones for phone numbers there. Again, am I missing something?

Thanks for your help!
