If you erase your phone, yes, all data on the phone will be erased.
ok thanks, how can i back it up to something, can i back it all up to my laptop and how do i do that please regards nj
You can try to force the phone into recovery mode, take a look at this article:

Basically turn the phone off, press and hold the home button and connect it to your computer using the USB cord, the computer.
Keep holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen, iTunes will then pop up a message saying a iPhone has been discovered in Recovery Mode and must be restored.
