Why are there 80 GB of backup files on my hard disc after using imovie 10, and deleting all of the projects after moving them off my hard disc? And how can I remove these "backup" files that I don't need?

You might be referring to the MobileBackups (local snapshots).

Open Time Machine and slide the switch from ON to OFF. Wait 5 seconds and switch it back to ON.

You can also disable MobileBackups:

Open Terminal and type sudo tmutil disablelocal

To reenable MobileBackups:

Open Terminal and type sudo tmutil enablelocal

The above 2 commands also will clear out what's there.

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.

If you took the bad advice that circulates on this site to disable local snapshots, you may have ended up with a large amount of data in the Other category. Reboot and see whether it goes away.
