Q: Is an iBook a glorified webpage?

Hi,

I don't mean to ask a provocative question here.

I'm wondering, given the automation tools available for the web, whether iBooks use technologies that go well beyond the capabilities of a browser. If so, what's fundamentally different.

Thank you,

You can explore this for yourself by reading about the .epub format which is one of those used in the iBookstore.  The .ibooks format produced by the iBooks Author app is an Apple-only addition to that providing multitouch features.

iBooks or eBooks or ePubs are what they say..books and web pages are totally different. Although in ePubs and iBooks Author HTML5 is used for some content.

Tom advises you check the ePub format, which is the core of all eBooks. The exception is the ibooks format created using Apples free software ..iBook Author, which creates an hybrid which is part eBook and part "app".
