can't empty trash. error code -8003

I'm unable to 'empty the trash' in my Mac Book Pro 9OS 10.6.8. I get an error message :"The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)". Anybody got any ideas on how to correct this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
