can't get facetime to connect.

Im having trouble logging into FaceTime. We have a valid apple id, and its verified, I'm connected to the internet. but every time i go to login it takes a long time and then says "cannot login, check your network connection and try again" but the network is connected just fine! any thoughts? its a home computer, not a public wifi connection. thanks in advance!
