Why does my touchID only work half the time

Sometimes there's no problem. But most the time I have to redo it a few times or enter pin bc it can't read it right apparently. Should've figured touchID was too good to be true. I've saved 2 different prints of each thumb just so maybe I'd get extra coverage but still doesn't work half the time...what's the beef with that???
