The last time you opened finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. - I get this message every time I turn on my computer in Mavericks

It doesn't matter if I have no Finder windows open when I shut down my computer, I will ALWAYS get this message when I start up my computer.

Any cures out there?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Step 2

In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

Linc Davis,

Thanks for the reply. While doing some unrelated house cleaning, (ie moving my steam install to external drive), I decided to go through my system preferences and remove some third party ones, some that have been getting re-installed since the switch to Intel processors, and I removed a couple that I no longer use. While they were technically already deactivated, it appears removing them and all their components has fixed whatever issue the finder was having. So clearly one of them wasn't truly inactive and was causing some sort of conflict with OSX's resume feature.

Thanks for your time, we can consider this one closed.

I'm having the same problem only it's with iTunes, can anyone help??? I've not been able to use it for 3 months and cannot find anything onlie to help unless I pay £75 to take into the Apple store. I've tried uninstall and reinstall but still nothing.

This is what comes up immediately after trying to open iTunes

"The last time you opened iTunes, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try reopen its windows again? If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself"

Can somebody please help?

I am having this problem. I had installed Yosemite and now I reinstalled Mavericks from a Time Machine backup.

Putting the backup back on appeared to be successful but then after a couple of minutes I started to get this error popping up. It doesn't matter if I click "Don't Reopen", or "Reopen" or if I do nothing - it keeps popping up and my desktop will flash for a second showing no icons, then the icons will be back and the error returns. It's like the Finder is stuck in a loop restarting over and over. I tried reinstalling the backup again and the same thing. I know it was working fine when I made the backup. Here is a partial dump of my Console:

Unfortunately we are not allowed to discuss anything to do with a not yet publicly released OS version (which appears to be the source of your problem) - please post your question in the special (developer) forums Apple makes available to you as we wouldn't be able to reproduce or help since we haven't installed it (or, if we have, our NDA prevents us from discussing it).

Dear Linc,

I'm experiencing the same problem. Just got a new macbook pro and upgraded to Yosemite. Prompt shows everytime I reboot, with the bouncing app icon. Everything seems to work fine once I click "Reopen" or "Don't Reopen" - doesn't seem to matter which I click. This is a copy from the entries in the system log -- thanks very much!

I also do not use Google Drive but am seeing the same Finder crashes... the only thing I notice different is that I installed a trial of ExpanDrive (to help mount things like OneDrive, Google Drive, etc. as external disks making them far more usable than the vendor's way of doing things). The trial expired so I will try removing that and see if my crashes go away. Sharing this in case you also tried some such Finder extension/help type utility.

This is what fix it for me.

Solution
This occurs due to an issue with the dynamic linker, a system-level mechanism which OS X uses to help applications launch more quickly. To resolve this issue, you need to use the command line to reset the dynamic linker cache. You must be either the computer's owner or a user who has been given administrative rights; restricted users cannot perform these steps.

  1. Open the Terminal app.
  2. Type: sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
  3. Press Return.
  4. When prompted, enter your OS X user password, and press Return.
  5. Wait until the text prompt returns, at which point the process will be complete.
  6. Restart the computer.

Thanks, D. H. I suspect my Finder crashes were caused by DropBox, which also is found crashed at launch. The specific condition in my case is that I am a little bit over the DropBox free storage and it tries to up-sell me more storage. That is the only difference between my current set up and in previous weeks (unless a DropBox app update had some new bugs in it).

But, I did use your message above to refresh my cache. Thank you.

So my Finder keeps crashing when launching it. I have Yosemite OS. I'm not tech savvy at all and I don't have all my files backed up.

Hi Linc Davis,

just out of curiosity.... my finder crashes when I click on my latest HGST 4 TB drive which I now use internally.

With other words I can not open it a normal way anymore.

I run disk Utility which says everything is fine.

The last thing I did was transfer files from that hdd to an other via CCC.

I am very new to CCC and I am still running a demo.

Could CCC have caused the problem?

Because I have been using this hdd as a storage of my transcoded videos (meaning I access it all the time) There is no original data of the 3.92 TB on the disk, but it would be just a lot of work to transcode them again.

I just wonder... because this is my latest hdd I just got a few months ago.

Thank you

Dorian
