Blue Screen and Mini Display Port Screens

I have a Macbook Air 2011 model, it will connect fine to any Thunderbolt displays but as soon as it's plugged into a screen with the mini display port connector, the laptop will get stuck on a blue screen until it's disconnected, and as far as I know it should be compatible with both types

Usually a PRAM reset will resolve it, but it hasn't and attempted an SMC reset plus a Firmware update, no change either

What else can I try?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

If you experience a black screen, or otherwise have an unusable picture after changing to some resolutions, try resetting the NVRAMfirst.

If you continue to experience the issue, startup the Mac in Safe Mode. Delete the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist file and restart the Mac.

If the problem persists you may have a bad adaptor.

Booted into Safe mode deleted the com.apple.windowserver.plist file and restarted, logged in, waited a few minutes, plugged in a another screen but the laptop continues to get stuck on a blue screen again

It's strange that Thunderbolt displays work fine but ones with Mini Display Port doesn't

Is this is a hardware fault?

At this point, from here, all I can offer is for you to try the same adaptor with someone else's Mac (or take it to an Apple store) to see if it does the same thing.

If it does then either the adaptor is part of the problem... or there's a bug in the hardware/software. If you're going to an Apple Store you may wish to bring your laptop with them to see if any of their VGA adaptors cause the same effect.
