Q: how to prevent kids from purchasing apps on iphone / ipod but allow for free ones to be downloaded?

Trying to figure out how to prevent kids from being able to buy apps using Ipod/Iphone under there own iTunes account.  When setting up an account, required to enter some account information to setup.

Want them to be able to use devices and download free itmes but can't seem to figure out how to disable the purchased app process.

Thanks

iPhone 4, iOS 7.0.3

If they have a credit card linked to their accounts then you could remove it. On your computer's iTunes you should be able to edit the payment info by going into the Store > View Account menu option and logging into the account, and on the account's details page there should be a payment link.  If you are doing it on the iPhone/iPod then try tapping on the id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and selecting 'View Apple ID' on the popup - that should also give you a payments link on your account's page.

Apart from that you can only stop them downloading any app on a device (Settings > General > Restrictions > Installing Apps 'off', which will hide the App Store app; you can also hide the iTunes store app), and you can also prevent in-app purchases via the Restrictions screen. There isn't a setting for only allowing free content to be downloaded.
