I have now unsuccessfully tried to connect to the in-flight wifi on United, Delta and AA.
I am able to connect to their wifi, but cannot open their respective sign in or purchase pages!
Anyone have a clue what settings I need to adjust?

Sadly I think that the airplane's router may be one of those that the 'MBA refuses to connect to (a known issue with certain wireless routers) that thread is 133 pages long. I think it's something you should take up with Apple Support (we do not work for Apple - we are volunteers).

You can not connect to the network - or you connect but can not load a web page? The links directions should have helped you to connect to a hot spot.
Are there arches in the Airport Icon in the Menu bar or is it Hollow or does it have a "!" ?
Often with pay networks you have a "welcome" page that has a User Agreement, Terms of Service and often a credit card entry point.
Sometimes Safari doesn't display that first page well, or at all. From Safari go File New Window...

Yes, I had full arches and was clearly connecting to the router, but was unable to pull up the welcome/signin/payment page.
It sounds like you may be right and I'll have to take this up with Apple Tech.

Well it might still be the Mavericks Wifi issue... slow throughput on an apparently strong signal is part of its behavior from what I've read. So to recap You got a signal (fairly Strong) appeared to be connected but Safari could not display the welcome page.
I'll share something I do in a case like that. I use Firefox. I keep a copy of Firefox, Opera and Chrome on my laptop because some sites use non-standard web code and the different browsers "play" better with the server/router. Safari is a lot better than it was when it first stared out but there are some sites put together (especially financial sites) that just won't let Safari play (they can code to prevent that).
If you have time between flights download Firefox and give it a shot... at this you have nothing to lose.

If your laptop is running Mavericks (OS 10.9.1) you may be experiencing the "Mavericks WiFi known issue".
What was it the UA said about personal attacks that you didin't comprehend?
I don't see how that thread helps me? Maybe I'm missing something, but I I cannot connect to the In-Flight wifi on an airplane.

Yeah, not very helpful. I may not be a savvy Mac user, but I'm not an idiot.
Flight attendant had no clue either and hoped I found an answer so that he could pass it along to others.
