Can I use a 40GB Hard Drive in my iMac G3 (Tray-Loader)?

Yes just remember to partition the first 8 gb of it or less to the os and just format the rest in a seperate partion.

I have a 350MHz slot loader I put a 40GB hard drive in. I'm running OS X on it, and did not make a seperate partition, the drive is formatted as a single 40GB partition. I thought the prohibition was at 128GB.

Your slot loader is a bit different form the older tray loaders. Both have the 128 gig limit on drive size, but tray loaders also have a limit on the partition size that the OS is installed on. It must be wholy contained within the first 8 gigs. The rest can still be used, you just that partition for the OS.

Yes you can. I believe you can run up to 10.2.8 on a single partition. Once you go to 10.3.x a partitition of less than 8GB is required for the OS. My Lime333 is running 10.3.9, and I just had to create a partition for it when I upgraded from 10.2.8.

Yes, 40 GB is OK. Not sure about partition requirements though. I have 2 iMacs 333mhz (both tray-loaders). Both have 40 GB hard disks with 1 partition each. I restored Mac OS X onto the single 40 GB partition using a emergency boot CD, Disk Utility and a external hard drive with a disk image of X (10.3.5). Both machines seem fine.
