Setting up hotmail in Mac OS X in Mail App with IMAP

How do I set up my Hotmail and MSN email accounts on my MacBook Pro Retina Display running Mavericks OS X (Version 10.9.1)?

I set up my hotmail.com or msn.com email on my MBP and then when I delete emails from my MBP the email is deleted from the computer but not on the iPhone, iPad, or online at the Outlook.com website. It's only deleted on my MBP.

I've set it up in IMAP with the correct settings but I must be doing something wrong.

I've set it up as an "Exchange" account and also an "Add another account" with no success.

Step by step instructions please.

Thank you.

Hello jacarmn,

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your Hotmail and MSN email accounts. It sounds like you need them setup as an IMAP account so the actions you take on your MacBook Pro will be reflected on the email server.

I recommend checking the settings using the following link. Enter your email address and on the next page select "I want to verify settings on an existing account," and you will be guided in verifying the IMAP settings:

Hi Sheila,

I am using a mac air and ipad mini. My mac is OS X 10.9.1

I looked at your link and used it step by step to set it up but was advised to initially put in a dummy email so that it allows me to add in imap.

Firstly my ipad is all working and my hotmail account is well synched. However with my mac after adding my hotmail account is does not work 100%

Inbox shows up along with all my folders, however i have the following problems:

1-attachments seem to be 'empty' when i try and open them?

2-when i do things on imail it does not seem to synch with my original hotmail account online, but my ipad and original hotmail account synch perfectly. ie. if i read an email on ipad it shows as read on the other, same with deleting emails etc. but this does not happen on the mac.

3)I then went to add another email account (hotmail) and all the folders appear with emails in but the inbox reamins empty, i can still send emails from this account but no new emails show in the inbox despite emails showing in sent, draft etc.

I have been told conflicting information about what to put in as server names when setting up the account, maybe this is the problem?

Also should i be able to view attachments in emails when offline? My email is not so so large so i would like to be able to?

Thank you in advance for any information.

Simon

Sheila_m.

I have to agree with Radishhartley. The solution you put out there did not help me either. I have set up my hotmail.com email account on my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro Retina Display running OS X Mavericks with IMAP on all devices. Everything syncs so nicely on my iPhone and iPad; however, the MBP never deletes email from the MSN Hotmail inbox.

I delete from iPhone and the email will delete from all the other devices and the MSN Hotmail online account inbox. The same with my iPad. It just doesn't delete or sync on the MBP. Is this a problem with OS X Mavericks????

Also, when I click on the link in your answer there is no option for OS X Mavericks. There are options for OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Lion, Mac OS X Snow Leopard & Mac OS X Leopard

Is the link correct?

It's very frustrating and searching for an answer online at other websites has not been helpful either.

I am also having trouble with my msn mail on my MacBook pro. Running OS X ElCapitan version 10.11.3

My msn mail will not send. Error message "connections to the server pop3.live.com on the default ports timed out".

I have read and tried several solutions from discussion boards, no help.
My mail accounts under the mail preferences window show msn listed both under imap and pop. (I also have gmail and that works fine)

I checked my account settings, apple shows they should be:

incoming IMAP

hostname IMAP-mail.outlook.com

server port 993

Outgoing

hostname SMTP-mail.outlook.com

server port 587

the mail preference window advanced tab on msn imap shows port 587. on msn pop shows port 995. (but I have no problem with incoming mail - that works)

thanks for any assistance

Thanks Eric. I went through those and found I had everything correct as far as I could tell. I went back in the account info and checked outgoing mail server>edit SMTP server list. On the advanced tab, I saw the "automatically detect and maintain account settings" box was unchecked. I checked that again (I may have unchecked it during different troubleshooting attempts) and now it works fine.

Cheers.
