Problem adding certain CDs to iTunes

I have been importing our CD collection to iTunes on our PC with mixed results. Most times I will insert a CD into the drive, iTunes recognizes it, and imports it. Certain other CDs seem to be recognized but then stall out, usually during the first song. Other CDs are not recognized at all. Would this be a problem within iTunes, with our CD drive, or the CD itself?

DeeDee,

iTunes has only one import preference that affects CD ripping, so the first thing to do is to follow this classic advice from Apple: "If the "Use error correction when reading Audio CDs" checkbox is not selected, select it. If it's already selected, deselect it."

The next thing to try is to rip one of the problem CDs in another program on the same computer, such as Windows Media Player. If it works, just add the resulting MP3s to your iTunes library.

Finally, be aware that some CDs, especially from the Warner Brothers Group, are "defective by design," i.e., are designed not to rip accurately.
