Using my iPad, in some Apple Support forums there is an option to use the advanced editor. However, clicking on this option does nothing although I understand that it is supposed to bring up an editing toolbar. What, if anything, am I doing wrong?

Nothing, it doesn't work with Safari in iOS.
I believe there may be some other browsers it works with, check the App Store.

Doesn't work with Safari on an iOS device (the forum platform is not, ironically, an Apple product and does not perform well on an iPad.). It will work on most browsers while using windows or MAC OS X. It will work on an iPad with some third party browses that permit altering the browserID (iCab Mobile, for example).
The primary thing you're doing wrong - well, not wrong, really, but at least somewhat fruitless, is to try to use your iPad in these forums. Jive, the software that runs these forums, really isn't iOS friendly. You'll get along much better if you connect here through your computer.

You're probably correct but, right now, I am sitting in a comfy armchair in a warm room with my trusty (OK, it's a bit fickle) iPad whereas my computer is in a garden office located a short distance from the house and it's dark, cold and wet outside.
If you are willing to spend a couple of bucks, try iCab Mobile. There is anotehr browser that will spoof browser IDs, but for the life of me I can't rember which one it is (but can verify it is NOT Chrome or Dolphin).
It so happens that I already have a browser called AtomicWeb on my iPad and this will bring up the advanced editor tool. Thanks for your suggestion as it prompted me to try AtomicWeb.
