Mac recently started going slow and getting the spinning wheel after almost every other click. How can I fix this?

I wish I could look over your sholder;)

Let's first get to the point of checking the S.M.A.R.T. status.

Be in the Finder (click on the backbround screen).

Look in the upper left menu bar a the following menu items:

 File Edit View Go Window Help

Pull down on Go, down to Utilities.

This will open the Applications > Utilities folder.

    Double click on Disk Utility.

Click on the upper left disk icon.

Look to the lower right of the Disk Utility window.

What does it say after S.M.A.R.T. Status:  ?

OK good. That was the first step.

Now just below it, indented you should see Macintosh HD.

Click on it and then click on Verify Disk.

Whoa.  That's one sick puppy.  No wonder it took so long to complete the Time Machine backup.

Let's skip the verify and go directly to the repair and see if that goes faster.

Quit Disk Utility, telliing it you don't want to continue.  Shutdown.

    Perform the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836.

If it does not repair on the first pass, try once or twice more.

If it repairs (finishes with a green OK message) then quit Disk Utility and reïnstall OS X.

Boot normally and test the system for speed.

If it will not finish with a green OK message then it is time to reformat the disk, wiping out all informatioin on it. It is a good thing you got that backup done before things got worse.

Great news.  It's not as sick as I thought.

Yes, run it again.  First click on Clear History and then on Verify Disk.  We will wait it out this time.   Look for a green OK message when it finishes.

OK.  This is actually good news.  There is an error that Disk Utility can now correct and that may put your Mac back in the pink.  (Don't count on that yet.)  It is good news that you can run these tests in a resonable amount of time.

    Perform the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836.

If it does not repair on the first pass, try once more.

Post back with the results.  I'll stay up.

BTW, what time zone are you in?  I'm on Eastern Time.

    Great progress.

Does it boot quickly and run quickly now?

See if it does before the next step.
