Q: How do you burn a DVD?

I have a 2007 imac...Mac OS X version 10.6.8, with one DVD portal.  I tried to insert a DVD (nothing special - a police evidence video), copy it, and then burn it to a DVD-R.  No succes.  It appears that some file comes up, but then the player states that the 'disk is not supported.'  How do I copy a disk to the computer, then burn it onto a CD or a DVD?  Thanks much in advance...

How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs

To create an image file, launch Disk Utility and select File: New: Disk Image From Folder. In the window that appears, navigate to the desired folder and then click on Image. Give the image file a name, and click on Save when prompted. That’s it.

Or, if you have Roxio Toast, just use the copy function.
