problem with mail .mp3 attachments

I can't figure out how to fix a lock up with mail when I try to attach an .mp3 file in mail 7.1 on Mavericks 10.9.1. Whenever I try to attach an .mp3 by dragging or using the "paperclip" I get a green + "copy" sign and then the beach ball, which never goes away. It is only a problem on my macbook pro. My iMac has the same versions and is just fine. I only have noticed problems with .mp3 files. I have no issues with anything else I've tried to attach.

OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Song length MP3's can be anywhere form 3-9mb or more and depending on the size, you may be exceeding the amount you can attach (per your email provider). If you have a 6 minute MP3 at 320kbps bit rate, it's 11mb. Most email sevices won't allow an attachment that big. Better to use an FTP client or a cloud service to transfer something that big.

Thanks for the suggestion. I should have said that this has nothing to do with file size. I use gmail which has a 25mb limit. I just tried an 11.5mb .pdf and had no issue. I've tried 3 or 4 second long .mp3 files and it always locks up.

Then it's most likely something in the files themselves.

Since it works perfectly on your iMac, but not on your Macbook Pro, it may be some settings in your Mail app on your MBP are not set the same as on your iMac.

And it almost sounds like your hanging Mail app is expecting to do something else with the MP3 file, or translate it into some other format. Have you demonstrated through other means that your MBP's MP3 files are not damaged or corrupted, or aliases rather than the actual files?

I have no issues with these .mp3 files outside of mail on my MBP. I just log into gmail through safari and send them to clients who also have no problem. Would love to do it through mail.

I wonder if you should reinstall Mail. Perhaps there is a way in Mavericks installer to customize the installation and just install certain apps.
