Google maps has stopped working in Safari

Within the last week, Google Maps has stopped working in Safari 6.1.1. It previously worked fine. The page starts to load, and then hangs. It displays the small rectangle that says "loading...". I have tried deleting Safari preferences. This had no effect. Any suggestions?

From the Safari menu bar, select

Safari Preferences... Extensions

Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

I turned extensions off, and Google Maps still does not load. I had only one Safari extension, ClickToFlash 2.8. I uninstalled it, turned extension off, and tried again. Google Maps still does not load.

FYI, I tried the latest version of FireFox, and encountered the same problem. Google Maps does not load. The page just hangs.

This is really puzzling. I have used Google Maps for years with no problem until about five days ago. Bing Maps works fine in Safari and Firefox.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I booted and signed in in safe mode. No effect. Google Maps displays the same behavior. It does not complete loading and hangs.

I rebooted (not in safe mode), and there was no change.

I have two programs that launch at login: DropBox and PopChar. I removed these from the login items list, rebooted (not in safe mode), and tried Google Maps again. No change.

Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.

Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?

If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?

If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

FYI, I enabled the 'Develop' menu in Safari and chose 'Show Error Console' while trying to load Google Maps. Here is the output:

Boot in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.

Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results.

I checked with my ISP, and the two DNS Servers that I have set up in the Network control panel are the correct ones. A tech friend suggested that I try adding the OpenDNS name servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. I added these to the list of DNS Servers in Network control panel, and Google maps now works normally. My ISP is not convinced that I have purely a DNS problem, and tech support is looking into it. My router is 14 years old and may need to be replaced. For now, everything works fine as long as I use the Open DNS name servers. http://www.opendns.com/

Today I used Software Update to install the latest version of Safari, version 6.1.2 (build 7537.74.9). Then I deleted the OpenDNS name servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 in the Network Control Panel, and restored the DNS server settings provided by my ISP. Google maps and support.google.com both load and function normally in Safari 6.1.2. So maybe this was all a problem with Safari 6.1.1.
