Why does my dock only play audio through the line out jack?

My iPhone 4S in an old iPod dock will only play audio through the line out jack, even when nothing is plugged into it. Is there any way to make the audio come through the phone while in the dock? I would like to listen to music whole having my phone in a dock without having to plug in headphones or a speaker to do so. Thanks!
