Recovery of data after 'erase all content and settings'

A friend of mine has given me her iphone 4 to see what I can do after someone selected 'erase all content and settings' thinking the phone was empty to get it ready for a new user.

It hasn't been used since the reset and is still in the setup stages (I thought that might increase the chance of successful data recovery). I have tried the iphone data recovery programs out there but none of them seem to work.
Icloud was not setup and the photos are the only copies of a long trip to Europe so it is kind of a big thing to get them back.

Can anyone out there point me in the right direction in getting the photos back?
