Word / Excel documents to I Cloud

I am placing Word / Excel documents to I Cloud - Pages or Numbers, so that I can retrieve and change them from my IPad (gen4), or from my PC Windows 7 from work. I can open it from I Cloud, however I cannot make any changes. I am simply draging them from my computer to I Cloud pages or Numbers, am I missing some step? Thank you!
