The problem is apparently due to a heat sensor on the motherboard shorting out when the heat sync expands from heating up. This is in no way a software issue. Contact apple care and they can have your logic board and heat sync replaced, which is supposed to fix the problem.
Also, see www.macbookrandomshutdown.com for other really frustrated people and to add yourself to their increasing list of effected serial numbers. My mbook has been gone 18 days while parts were on order, supposed to be back tomorrow, fingers are crossed.

Fixes applied before approximately 9/17/06 were probably incomplete. There are known reports of machines having to go back for second, or even third repairs before that date.

Reportedly, Apple has figured out the issue and redesigned the MLB and a key heatsink to repair the problem, and have just started geting the parts in significant quantities in the last few days.

What you do about your machine is up to you, but you might consider watching these boards for a few more days to see if those folks with the problem are happy with the new fix. My bet is that things are going to be much improved in about another week.

My machine comes back tomorrow. Send prayers to the gods of hardware for me.

what the heck - if your computer has a fault and is into warranty time, too, why not take it back and have it repaired for free instead of whinching about it ??!!

fair enough it could be microsoft's fault: pc users are so used to unresolvable hard- and software issues, they really seem to believe that every computer has to be a piece of sh**...

well, now that you own a mac, live up to it, get a grip and get help!

else, just go ahead, go back to pc, and guess what: we dont feel threatend at all...

I got my Black MacBook back yesterday, and its running much cooler. It had a new logicboard installed 2 weeks ago, but would not turn on without a streaked screen. I told the tech about this discussion group, and that I read replacement logic boards were also defective.
He put a call into Apple, and ordered another "new" logic board ,and a heatsink "just to be sure", installed it Monday, and I have been using it since. Temp of the core is now 80 degrees F, and the fan isnt audible, so I guess its fixed. Keeping my fingers crossed. My advice is to get a logicboard and a heatsink (and ask for a logicboard from Apple, rather than any "in stock" logicboards your repair facility may have in stock; Apple has probably trashed a bunch of obbviously defective logicboards. Good Luck!

hey brother, thats how i show my anger for having a computer wich does'nt work, sorry if i hurt your feelings but it really does'nt matter what we put in these topics, because apple just
ignores it anyways(in most cases)so why not start a revolution against them? thats how they introduced the product to us, so here is our answer, and you are bitter, i'm happy, perhaps u are bitter because of the snow and elks up there!!!...hehehe...
allright lets keep it civilised, thats the only way in our great country the USA, don't know abuuuut y'all, aih! PEACE OUT!

it would be interesting to start a revolution against apple. then start a revolution against sony for flaming batteries.

apple doesnt really ignore the problem, they just dont make big public announcements about it because they dont want to cause unneeded worry on people that dont yet have problems with their computers.

put yourself in their position. you market a product. you make lots of money on the product. BAM! a good chunk starts to get a major glitch. you receive examples for repair. all the while you tool at it and work to find a solution to the problem. bingo you found it. you simply manufacture new ones with this solution, and you keep fixing older ones that are sent back.

now do that again while making a public announcement. you market a product. a problem arises with the product. you tell everyone about the defect inherent in that product. worried consumers return product for refund.
