cannot download Java

For 10.6.8, open Java Preferences.app and check what version of java is installed. If none, it will invite you to download the appropriate version.

For 10.7.3 and later, Java has converged into the version supported by Sun and Oracle:

In either case, if you are using Java inside a Browser, Java is OFF by default. You will need to use the Browser's preferences to enable Java for that web site.

I just got off phone with AppleCare about same issue. Here is how to fix:

How to reinstall Java for 10.6.8:

- Go to: /System/Library/Java/Support/CoreDeploy.bundle/Contents

- Move: javaAppletPlugin.plugin to the trash

- Run update --- Found at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573

- Reset safari

- Empty cache
