Hard disk icon name change, don't know how/why

MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.5

After updating Apple and Adobe Reader software and checking a few of my files, I noticed the name of my hard disk had changed from the default to $^poiuytreza. The icon is the only one on my desktop and 12 characters seems a lot to be the result of my typing. I am the sole user of the computer. The name of the hard disk was checked, see following extract from Apple symbol (top left)/About this Mac/more info/system report thenLeft column: Software/Sync Services/Logs/system.log

Can anyone diagnose the problem please?
