Macbook 2010 slow after upgrading OS X

Hello.

I use a MAcbook unibody late 2010. I upgrated to OS X Mavericks and everything was running very smooth (I updated from 10.8.5).

But, a few weeks later, I updated my Microsoft Office 2011 and immediatly I started to have problems with my Mac.

I tried reseting PRAM and SCM. I tried rebuildind the Microsfot Office Database, but the problems continues... It got to a point where I had to configure spotlight, so that it doesn't indez anything!! It just keeps indexing for very long! Then after I reboot my Mac, it starts everything all over again!

I used disk utilities, but everything seems under control!

1. My OS X Mountail Lion Recovery Partition wasn't erased! I have two now: OS X 10.8 RP & OS X 10.9 RP;

2. I used 'EtreCheck' and got this...

  1. You need more RAM. Mavericks will run with 2 GB of RAM, but it won't run well. My MBP 8,2 has 8 GB and a SSD and is fast.
  2. You also need more free space on your HD, regardless of when the slowness started. It's not helping.
  3. You are not really running OSX, but your own heavily modified version of OSX, with a lot of background processes running. Apple recommends that developers not use background processes in apps any more.
    1. You can test this theory by doing a safe boot: restart and hold down shift. A safe boot does some diagnostic testing and then starts up without added-on third party software. I bet your Mac will run much faster. But a safe boot doesn't fix anything, it just tells you where the problem is.
    2. I would try to uninstall as much of the background processes as you can. On the top of the list of suspects would be:
      1. all the kernel extensions.
      2. freemacsoft.appcleaner (this is crapware. Crapware is anything that purports to “optimize”, “clean”, “accelerate”, “monitor”, or “protect” your Mac. Unnecessary.
      3. google keystone daemon (on the frequent flyer list for misbehaving slow macs, for excessive phoning home)
      4. all the intego stuff. Antivirus software is minimally useful on macs, and often slows things down.
      5. CleanMyMac is crapware, almost the worst crapware there is. Should really be called, “TakeABigShitOnMyMac”. Not only unnecessary, but frequently harmful to your OS. It can damage your OS beyond a simple repair. You may have to do a clean reinstall.
      6. DriveGenius

If I were you, I'd just back up my documents, erase the HD, and do a clean reinstall of Mavericks, because CleanMyMac has probably damaged your OS. After your clean install you can install the apps you really need, and make sure they are compatible with Mavericks, and not reinstall any crapware.

Hello!

First of all, thank so much fro taking the time to help me.

Second, this is one of the most compreensive explanations I've received in a long time.

I never had problems with Clean my Mac (that I was aware of), till the day I installed it on OS X Mavericks! Do you know how many times my icons disapeared after running a system diagnosis?!?!

Also, I do have Drive Genius, because I was very much amazed by it's defragmentation abillity! Keeping my HD full of files always makes it prone to fragmantation!

I'll go try, what you suggested: Safe Mode Boot! Also, I'll post the results here! Maybe there usefull to someone else too! :-) A last question though, what apps do you suggest to substitute Clean my Mac & Drive Genius?! Maybe Apple has smething that I'm not used on using?

Thank you!

  1. Macs can take care of themselves. They do not need any third-party "utilities" to be running in the background all the time. Mavericks has built-in maintenance capabilites that work fine all by themselves.
  2. Macs do not need to be defragmented. Keep enough free space on your mac (like maybe 15-20%), and you'll be fine.
  3. You do not need anything to substitute for CleanMyMac. If you want to uninstall an app, you can just drag it to the trash. Stay away from any app that claims that it can optimize, clean, accelerate, monitor, or protect your mac. These are all garbage.
  4. It is a good idea to have one third-party app for troubleshooting problems with your Mac. I like Techtool Pro 7 but it is unnecessary to have it running all the time in the background. TechTool can occasionally fix something that Drive Utility can't. That's why it is good to have in case your Mac runs into a problem. There are parts of Techtool which it is unnecessary to install- the parts that run all the time in the background. I think these are called Techtool Protection.

Hello Arthur,

Ok. I decided to follow some of your suggestions!

Since I wasn't happy with 'Clean My Mac 2', I decided to removed it! After doing that, all my icons became invisible... something that ALWAYS happens when I use that software! I actually had to reinstall OS X Mavericks, to solve the problem!

Also, I made sure to erase some Kerner files: mainly, kerner files from softwares that I had already unistalled because I didn't needed them, or they weren't compatible with OS X 10.9!

Now, my Mac is very much faster... not necessarily has smooth has my Mac OS X 10.6 partition, but faster than yesterday! Also, I was having some trouble with Disk Utility: it wasn't letting me run some diagnosis. After the re-installation of OS X, all diagnosis are working! :-)

Can I ask for a last advice!? After upgrading, I noticed that I have two Recovery Partitions! One for OS X 10.8.5 & other for OS X 10.9.1 . Is there any way of 'erasing' the OS X 10.8.5 Recovery Partition? Without having to perfomer a clean install, of course!

Last, naturally, I do need to performe a clean install! There's many 'junk' files from OS X 10.6, OS X 10.7 & OS X 10.8 thata don't seem to be useful at all...

All the best for you & Thank you for the help!

Ok.

The link you proovided me wasn't useful, has I'm quite aware of how to partition an hard drive. BUT, I did find this link, whihc helped me deal with the extra Recovery Partion! It was actually quite easy to erase it without corrupting any data! :-D

Till now, my OS X Mavericks partition / OS X Snow Leopard partition are working smoothly!

Thnak you one again! :-D
