Mac Mini not connecting to internet

Hi,

I have a Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo that I use with my TV. It has 2 GB of ram. And it's running 10.6.8,

I have a time capsule that all my devices use to connect to the internet. All of them are working (Macbook Air, iPhones, iPad...).

The Mini is conncected to the time capsules network but will not load an internet page. I have turned off my routers, unplugged all connections, waited a bit and then restarted everything. Nothing seems to be working.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

The mini is on the TC network. I can connect to the Mini from the Air with no problem. The air is the most up to date with 10.9.1 OS. So when I look at the network preferences to compare they are not quite the same. The Air network connection says Wi-Fi and the Mini says Airport. The IP addresses are different. There are 2 of the same DNS servers but the Air has two other DNS servers in addtion to the two that are the same as the mini. I am not sure where to find the network address or the default gateway.

The network address is probably not shown but the subset mask should be the same as the the Air and the default gateway is probably labeled as router.

You say the Air is connected to WiFi which I presume is your router were as the Mini is connected to the airport.

Does the Mini work if you select to connect to WiFi instead of Airport?

I am guessing on how your network is setup.

1. You have a router that connects to the internet and includes WiFi.

2. The TC connects by Ethernet to the Router and also provides a WifI signal labelled Airport.

3. Your TC is in Bridge mode for its network.

If this is not how you have it set up could you clarify.

The only thing I can think of without knowing exactly how your network is set up is to ask have you more than one DHCP server operating on the network. If you have and they giving out conflicting settings I could see that causing problems.

You can have two DHCP servers running but they must have their configuration carefully setup. On a home network it is not advisable to have more than one.

My network is set-up mostly as you said above:

1. I have a router that connects to the internet and includes WiFi (this is from my ISP).

2. The TC connects by Ethernet to the Router and also provides a WifI signal labelled Airport.

3. Your TC is in Bridge mode for its network. (not sure what bridge mode is).

So yes I have two Wi-FI networks going. One from the ISP's router and one from my TC.

What should I do? Turn off the Wi-Fi on the ISP's router? I'm not sure that is possible. Can I turn off the Wi-fi on the TC? I need to use it for backing up.

I really appreciate your trouble shooting this for me!

The seagate doesn't fit in the network. I only used it so my son could watch netflix on the tv this morning. I don't usually have it set up. I connected it's wi-fi to the TC network and it worked fine. But as I said this is temporary and I will turn it off.

I just want to get the TC working on the mini as it works on everything else. The ISP's wi-fi is broadcasting too. I just looked at it and it has the same IP address as the TC. So I am guessing that could be the issue? Can I change the IP address on one of them?

Sorry. No it doesn't. One is 10.0.0.1 and one is 10.0.0.3.

I would only want one DHCP server for home networks unless you understand how to set it all up. Usually that would be the router. The router would give out the IP to clients, tell them to use itself in this case 10.0.0.1 as the Gateway to the internet (Apple label it router) and in many cases which DNS server to use, very often itself again but you could use others by setting them manually in Network settings on the Air and Mini.

If the TC is not set in Bridge mode it would be better to have it that way but read this article first.

Some information on when and when not to use bridge mode.

Also the TC must have its own IP address, either choose one manually and set up the router not to give that IP address out with DHCP. Or easier still have the TC get its IP from the router like everything else.

Note the router is the DHCP server and the Air, Mini and TC would be DHCP clients, so you may see DHCP mentioned in the setup, be sure you know which is client and which is server.
