Guys - I'm an author. I write on a mac currently running 10.9.1 and I transfer the pdfs to the iPad so I can read them in text layout - it does make a difference.
So now I can't find how to sync the pdf of the book to the iPad
help?

You can use iBooks on your original iPad to read PDFs. Presumably you do not have the iBooks app on your iPad. The latest version will not run on iOS 5.1.1. So this article explains how to get a compatible version for your old iOS:
I do have iBooks on the iPad - but I hadn't figured out the manual method of synching... it's sorted now, thank you
