Q: How can I delete a page in a PDF with Maverick's Preview 7.0?

I can't seem to delete a separate page in a PDF using Maverick's Preview 7.0.

I can go get the sidebar to appear by going the View menu and clicking on "Table of Contents."  I see the separate pages listed there, but when I click on an individual page, "delete" is grayed-out in the Edit menu and pressing on the delete key in the keyboard alone or in combination with option or command keys does nothing.

Please help.

I figured it out!  In case this is useful to anyone else: I just needed to go to the Edit menu and choose "Thumbnail."  Once the list of pages is turned into Thumbnails, you can delete them.

Apple products are not as intuitive is they used to be.

Or download a PDF magic tool to help you reorder your PDF files with merge, insert and split.

This doesn't work for me. Edit menu does not include "Thumbnail" as an option. The Thumbnails appear automatically in Preview but there is no delete option, even grayed-out. There is a "Cut" option but it is grayed out.

Hmm, I'm not sure what happened, but yes, I tried going to the "Edit" dropdown and there is no thumbnail option.

Instead, when you're inside a PDF, you can access the thumbnail option by cllcking on the icon on the PDF in the upper-left corner.  There should be a choice for "thumbnail."  Once you click on it, it should leave a checkmark next to it.  Then you should be able to select individual pages for deletion.

I have no problem accessing thumbnails. Once I highlight a thumbnail, it surrounds it with a blue border (no check mark). Then the option to Edit>Delete is grayed out as well as Cut, Copy and Paste.

Here's what I did (each step corresponds to one of the four screenshots below):

    1. Opened PDF in Preview and clicked on icon in the upper-left corner.

    2. Selected "Thumbnail" (so that there the checkmark moves from "Content Only" to "Thumbnail")

    3. Step two should open a left column with all the thumbnail pages and you can select the page you want to delete (in the screenshot, I selected Page 2 and it turned the page number "2" blue).

    4. Then go up to "Edit" and delect "Delete".  That should delete the selected page.Step One.pngStep Two.pngStep Three.pngStep Four.png

I had the same problem with the grayed out delete button, so I clicked on the thumbnail that I wanted to delete and then hit the delete key on the keyboard. The page I wanted deleted was deleted. So hope this helps the folks that had the gray delete button.

The delete page option appears to be selectvely disabled in the original document. I can select pages I want to delete from the thumbnail sidebar and also delete - only if the original document has not disabled it. Preview doesn't seem to have the authority to override it.

It is really a shame that Preview can't do this.  The Merging of PDFs seems to work reasonably well, but this deleting pages is a real weakness.

Back in February I bought something called "PDF Toolset" from the Mac App Store for $0.99 (I think it was on sale - it is $1.99 today).  It was an impulse buy for me but I had never used it until today.  I dusted it off and it was simple, intuitive, and fast.  A great solution to the problem at a price that is hard to beat.  But I wish they'd improve this capability on Preview.

It can. Select the thumbnail (or thumbnails) and go to Edit>Delete

Thanks, Csound1.  I tried that, but I can't get it to work.  I've tried highlighting a group of pages, and an individual page.  The "delete" function doesn't work -- or at least it doesn't work for me on my document (maybe some documents are locked)?

    Hmm, that's not normal.

Which version of OSX do you use?

I'm on 10.9.5, latest version.  Always stay up to date.  From reading this thread, I got the sense I wasn't the only one?

I'm a beta tester for Yosemite, on a spare computer.  Maybe I should try it there and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your interest! I really appreciate the Apple support community.

Apart from a couple of SL installatuons we use the same versions (I have many), none of mine exhibit that behaviour, on any installation?

Dd you install the Delta (app store) or Combo (direct download) update?
