Photos for MacA mid 2011 iMac does NOT use minidvi so you have the wrong adapter. You need a Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter.

You may need to try a higher quality cable, here is a an Apple article about them and I've had good luck buying Apple's cables and I have had good luck with Mono Price. Try About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adpaters.
